Hiking Colorado's Summits (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (June, 1999)
Authors: John Drew Mitchler and Dave Covill
Average review score:

Colorado Summit Fever
As with most 2nd editions the authors have enhanced their publication. Route descriptions are more concise and easier to follow. Plus, they have added a multitude of new photos which help you navigate your way to the Colorado summit. The addition of Broomfield County was a nice addition since it has just become a county.

The 1st edition was a landmark production and the 2nd edition is just that much better. A must purchase for anyone who is serious about hiking/climbing to the highest point of each Colorado county.

A Guidebook You Can't Do Without
As someone who has summitted the 100 highest peaks in the lower 48 states, including the 200 highest peaks in Colorado, as well as the 50 state highpoints, I recognize the value and importance of a good guidebook. It is imperative to have John & Dave's book while pursuing yet another list of hiking goals.

This book contains important information not available elsewhere. The information is arranged in a practical and useful manner. I found the driving and hiking maps to be invaluable (many county highpoints are in very obscure locations).

If you want to see parts of Colorado that you may not have visited before, this is a fun guide to use.

This book is suberbly researched and delightful to read.
The information available in this book, whether you are an experienced hiker/climber or new to the sport, is outstanding. Mitchler and Covill have put together an excellent, meticulously researched guidebook (including specific no-fail directions ) for anyone wanting to hike Colorado's county highpoints. In a delightful addition to that, the book also provides detailed information about the towns, counties, and often the history surrounding each highpoint. This is an excellent book whether you want to actually go out on the trail, or just read about these Colorado scenes. Excellent photos complete this book. You won't be disappointed!

Summit : Vittorio Sella : Mountaineer and Photographer : The Years 1879-1909

Kallmes edits showstopper
Paul Kallmes compiled and edited a stunning collected of photogaphs and essays concerning the work of Vittorio Sella. He is to be commended for bringing this collection of Sella's photographs to the attention of North American readers. Mr. Kallmes is a visionary. Bravo and thank you Paul!

Sublime Peak Experiences
Vittorio Sella is little-known today, but knowledgeable people like Ansel Adams consider him one of the greatest mountain photographers ever. Sella did his work at a time when cameras weighed 40 pounds, glass negatives two pounds apiece, and mountain climbing was much more primitive than today, without the warmest clothes, tough equipment and bottles of oxygen. Sella is also known for being the first person to scale the Matterhorn in winter.

Sella was the son of the first Italian to write about photography and his uncle was a famous leader of Italian mountaineering. Expedition photographs were a new idea in his day, and primarily served the purpose of map-making for subsequent expeditions. Sella's work also served that purpose, but transcended it with stunning minimalist views. As Ansel Adams points out in his preface, Sella also understood the technique of mountain photography in ways that are missed by many current photographers.

His work was of such stature that he was invited along on important expeditions by the Duke of Abruzzi, which allowed him to be the first to create images of many important scenes. These expeditions included his native Alps, Alaska, Uganda, the Caucasus range, and the Himalayas. His photograph of K2 in the Himalayas is considered the finest one ever.

As dazzling as these images are, the essays in the book greatly add to them by explaining the context of their creation, the photographic problems involved, and the artistic aspects of the work. I enjoyed reading each of them, because each shed a different light on the work.

Although the book is about summit photographs, the book includes many photographs during the ascents, of the people met during the expeditions, and of local scenery.

The summit photos are remarkable to me in many ways. First, he made great efforts to get the right perspective -- often climbing another mountain to get a view the the one alongside. Second, he created stunning panoramas of the major chains which exceed what the eye can see, even if you were there. Third, the pictures have a sense of motion in the glaciers that is quite remarkable. These rivers of ice look like they are moving in videos when you look at them. Fourth, the mountain views have a spiritual quality that is uplifting. Your view of mountains will be forever changed by these photographs.

Also, I feel grateful for the photographs because, although I love mountains, I am not a mountain climber and would never have a chance to see these beautiful, inspiring scenes otherwise.

I encourage you to read and enjoy this book as example of what goals can provide. In the days when Sella was climbing there was no chance of reaching the top of many of these peaks, such as K2 (thought by many to be the toughest mountain in the world to climb). Yet the climbers and Sella achieved lasting meaning for themselves and for us in their partially successful endeavors. Goals take us to the top of our skills by extending our ambition and focus. Be sure you are always looking for the next mountain to climb (and photograph). Let these wonderful images inspire you on to your personal greatness! Also, think about choosing goals that will aid and inspire others for many years in the future as Sella did.

Captures the spirituality of the mountains
Vittorio Sella photographed primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century and chronicled many important expeditions. In this book, the authors present an wonderful array of his work, and the photographic reproductions are remarkably loyal to the originals in coloration. Admirers of Ansel Adams will love this book and will clearly see the antecedents of his style.

Peak Experiences, Hiking the Highest Summits of New York, County by County
Published in Paperback by Footprint Press (19 June, 2000)
Author: Gary Fallesen
Average review score:

Great read about hiking those "boutique" peaks.
This is a great collection of hikes and stories that prove once again that 4000 footers are not the only adventures waiting to be had. New Yorkers are so fortunate to have so many wild and unspoiled places to get away from it all. If you like hiking for the sake of hiking (or even if your "counting" peaks) this is a fun book. Meeting people along the trail is always adventurous and filled with suprises. Those shared experiences are an essential part of these stories. It makes me want to grease up my boots, grab Gary's book, and get out there.

Top notch guide to New York peaks!
This is an excellent guide to hiking the highest peaks in the 62 counties of New York State. The author Gary Fallesen started his quest thinking it would take a few months. As he searched for the highest natural peaks county by county he discovered that in many cases the information was not known! He ended up spending hours interviewing, and researching to determine the highest peak often getting mixed information. The result of his work is "Peak Experiences". Time may show that Fallesen missed a higher peak but in the meantime "Peak Experiences" offers an extraordinary body of work to make the trip more pleasurable! The book includes many tips for the traveler. It covers each summit with interesting personal antecdotes of the people Fallesen met and/or the authors thoughts. This folksy sharing makes the journey real and Fallesen's book much more than the typical tour guide! But Fallesen includes the nitty gritty too. In Peak Experiences you will find detailed maps including the best approach to the peak, season recommendations, visitor accomodations, gear guide, trip planning, the view and even a sweat index of the effort entailed! The author also includes a checklist to note your personal high point accomplishment and a place at the end of each section to make notes. The book is nicely sized to tuck in a backpack for constant referral. A must have for hiking New York summits!

A terrific guide enhanced with a wealth of pictures & maps.
Peak Experiences is a traveler friendly county-by-county guidebook specifically designed for anyone wanting to hike the highest summits in the state of New York. Enhanced with a wealth of pictures, maps, and regional information, author Gary Fallesen's comprehensive text touches on approaches, trail markings, the expected views, the origins of peak names, visitor accommodations, nearby activities, and sources of essential trip planning information. If you are bound for a hike in the New York high country, begin with a copy of Gary Fallesen's Peak Experiences!

Texas golfers must
This book has been a great help and a pleasure to thumb through. I just wish there was a newer version.

A must-buy book for every golfer in the state of Texas
A very comprehensive review and rating of 400+ golf courses from the Colonial country club to the Falfurrias,Tx muni!! If you've ever played a round of golf in Texs, your course is probably listed and rated. Excellent descriptions of the top 300.A few minor errors like calling Hole No.1 of the Woodlands TPC No.13, and a photo of a hole on Portland's Northshore CC which isn't there. But a big bang for your $$$$$ , and a true collector's item, or coffee table book.

Beautiful and comprehensive.
This book is one of the most complete books ever written on golf in the state; one part photo album, one part history book and one part travel guide. A large book with a large attitude.

The Weekend Crafter: Gourd Crafts: From Bowls to Birdhouses, 20 Great Projects to Dye, Paint, Cut, Carve, Bead and Woodburn in a Weekend
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publishing (June, 2000)
Author: Ginger Summit
Average review score:

I'm Hooked!
All I had to do was fan through the photos and I was hooked! The detailed instructions were great, but the photos make you see gourds in a whole new light! It has definitly re-awakened a creative need!

Another Great Book
This book is every bit as good as her other book: "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft". It has different projects to inspire creativity, and it has fantastic photographs and detailed instructions. The only thing lacking (from both books) is the supply sources which are listed in the table of contents, but don't appear in the books anywhere I can find. Even without that part, the book is excellent.

Another winning book by Ginger Summit.
Gourd Crafts, 20 Great Projects to Dye, Paint, Carve, Bead and Woodburn in a Weekend, is a gotta have book for all gourd crafters. I have all of Ginger's other books, and am just as excited, upon receiving this book, as I was with her others. Ginger always puts out all new information in each of her new books. I have been gourd crafting for 13 years, and yet her books are completely filled with new information, myself and others, can't wait to try. Making flowerpots, tea cups, napkins rings and bracelets are just a few of her new ideas that I plan to try. This book also includes new beautiful gourd work by other artists and crafters, not seen before. If you love working on gourds, get this new book. I will look at it, and learn from it for years to come, as I have with her other books.

As Max Saw It: Climbing 7 Summits Sol
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Publishing (March, 1997)
Author: Louis Begley
Average review score:

A modern classic
Reminiscent of The Great Gatsby yet 100% original at the same time, this novel has all the makings of a classic of American literature. This is a novel of epic proportions, packed into less than 150 pages. It spans three decades and traverses three continents. It is beautifully paced, at times flowing like a gentle stream, offering nuanced, elegant prose and character development, then switching purposefully and gracefully into much broader brush strokes to account for the passage of time. This is the book for which Begley will be remembered several generations from now.

As with the great first-person narrators in classics like Brideshead Revisited and Fifth Business, Max Strong is a keen yet passive observer, comfortable enough blending into the scenery so as not to obstruct the reader's view of the novels fascinating characters. Charlie, the brilliant, extravagant architect with an ego to match his talent, bobs in and out of Max's life, first appearing at an Italian villa where he and Max have been invited as guests, then in Beijing where Max has offered his legal expertise while on sabbatical from Harvard Law School, then again in Cambridge, MA and the Berkshires where Max works and vacations respectively. Their relationship is both antagonistic and co-dependent, as Max serves as conscience and confessor for Charlie in regard to the latter's romantic involvement with Toby, the young, attractive, and troubled youth that Charlie takes under his wing. And yet, while Max rarely asserts himself as anything more than an astute narrator, the book is just as much about him as it is about those that he observes.

It is a remarkable accomplishment that Begley has expressed so much beauty in so few pages. His settings and his characters sing with authenticity, and his prose offers the perfect current to carry his flawlessly-crafted story.

Excellent insight into male friendships
I enjoyed the old fashioned tone of this novel. The main character, Max, is a kind of "fifth business," telling the story and having things happen to him without his really being involved. His friendship with Charlie deepens over the course of the book, effecting him in ways he never would have imagined. The writing and langauge are exceptional in a modern author. The characters in this short but intense book (145 pages) have a lot in common with those that appear in the Schmidt books where they are further fleshed out. I recommend all of Begley's books: I've read four this year.

Desert Summits: A Climbing & Hiking Guide to California and Southern Nevada
Published in Paperback by Spotted Dog Pr (June, 2003)
Authors: Andy Zdon and Wynne Benti
Average review score:

A great resource
Although I'm waiting try the new hikes detailed in this book (I'll wait till summer passes, thanks), I have found it to be a great read on its own merits. The physical descriptions of the areas covered are detailed and evocative without being flowery; the driving and trail directions are as exact as they can be given the remoteness of some of these areas. Mr. Zdon knows these places inside and out, and he goes well beyond the obvious choices into some wild and relatively unexplored terrain. This book introduced me to some new places I want to experience, and made me realize I don't know my "familiar" spots as well as I thought. The volume is also very handsomely illustrated and produced.

Hiking California & Southern Nevada desert summits
Andy Zdon has done a very thorough job researching the approaches and hiking/climbing routes in this guide book. I especially liked the fact that he warns the reader against taking passenger cars up roads which he feels require 4WD capability. The inclusion of general area maps and actual photographs make the book even more useful. Descriptions are great but someone said "a picture is worth a thousand words". Included in the descriptions are such useful topics as the anticipated round trip elevation gain and hiking distance. In some instances Andy has added his personal comments regarding safety issue or things like "don't underestimate the difficulty of this hike". The personal touch gives the guide book user more of a "hands on" feel to the overall hike. I recommend Desert Summits to all of those folks who are planning to get out and hike/climb the areas described in the book. Hey, here's another "list" to get you out of the house this winter.

Average review score:

No one can match Bayne.
Understanding new institutions, like building them, takes sensitivity, wisdom and patience. Sir Nicholas Bayne has those assets in abundance, and in this new history of the annual Western economic summits he deploys them with great skill. No other observer can match Bayne's combination of extensive personal knowledge and sophisticated interpretive skill. This book surveys the first quarter century of summitry against the wider backdrop of globalization and institutional change. A must-have for anyone interested in contemporary global political economy.

Indispensable!
An indespensable guide for all students of this subject, from the man who probably knows more about its history than anyone else.
